On iPhone or Android, tap Scan Receipt and point the camera at the check. Pitip reads the total, tax, and any service fees, then shows you what it found so you can confirm or correct each amount before it is applied.
Everything happens on your device. No photo is saved, and no image or text is uploaded. Declining camera access disables scanning and leaves the rest of the app working normally.
Every scanned amount is editable on the confirmation screen before you tap Use — just tap the field and correct it. Scanning is a shortcut for typing, not a replacement for checking your bill.
Pitip looks for labelled amounts. Receipts that abbreviate unusually, print the tax without a label, or place amounts in a column layout can defeat it. Enter the missing amount by hand on the confirmation screen and the rest of the reading still stands.
Many receipts print a gratuity guide showing 18%, 20%, and 22% with dollar amounts. Pitip is built to ignore those, but if one slips through, correct it on the confirmation screen and please send us a photo of the receipt so we can fix it.
Check that camera access is allowed for Pitip in your device Settings. Scanning also needs a rear camera, so it is unavailable in simulators and on hardware without one.
Flatten the receipt, get even light on it, and frame the whole check rather than zooming in on one line. Thermal paper that has begun to fade is the hardest case; typing the total is faster than fighting it.
No. All calculations happen on your device, including receipt text recognition. Nothing is sent to any server — the app contains no networking code. See our Privacy Policy for full details.
No. The camera frame is read on your device using Apple's Vision framework. No photo is saved to your library or written to storage, and no image or recognized text leaves your phone. Declining camera access disables scanning and leaves everything else working.
Turn on "Tip before tax & fees" and enter the tax and fee amounts from the receipt. Pitip then calculates the tip from the subtotal alone. On an $86.75 check with $7.16 tax and a $3.00 service fee, a 20% tip comes to $15.32 instead of $17.35.
Yes. Tap "Custom" on the tip selector and enter any percentage you'd like.
Pitip divides the total (tip included) evenly across the number of people you specify. Perfect for group meals, and everyone pays their fair share.
You can round the final total up or down to a cleaner number. This is especially useful when paying cash. Pitip automatically adjusts the tip to make the total land on a round amount.
Use "Make total…" on iPhone or Android. Enter exactly what you want to pay, and Pitip back-calculates the tip percentage that gets you there.
By design. The watch app is intentionally streamlined for speed and discretion. For receipt scanning, splitting, rounding, target totals, and pre-tax tipping, use the full app on your phone.
Check your split count, rounding settings, and whether pre-tax mode is enabled. Each setting affects the final total.
Force quit the app and relaunch. If the problem persists, restart your device. As a last resort, delete and reinstall. Your settings will reset but your data is not lost because nothing is stored.
Ensure your watch and phone are paired and both running the latest version of Pitip and their respective OS. A watch restart often resolves sync issues.
